Advocacy and Research

Advocacy and research are essential components of our work at ACKA.

Research

Why is there a need for more research in Black kidney health in Canada?

  • Historically, Black kidney health research in Canada has not been prioritized
  • Black kidney health concerns in Canada might be different from that in other countries, including the United States
  • Disparities in Black kidney health affect all Canadians
  • To promote health equity

What are some of the concerns that could be examined?

  • Lack of knowledge about the prevalence of kidney disease in Black versus other persons in Canada
  • Lack of knowledge about the prevalence and control of kidney disease risk factors – including Diabetes and Hypertension – in Black versus other persons in Canada
  • Lack of knowledge about the prevalence of genetic risk factors for kidney disease in Black Canadians
  • Lack of knowledge about why Black Canadians receive less transplants than other Canadians
  • Need for a better understanding of the roles that the social determinants of health –  including household income, racism and discrimination – play in kidney health disparities in Canada
